How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Cushion signal light assemblies and control leads inside each box with foam or bubble to prevent lens cracks and connector damage.
  2. Immobilize hooks and mounting brackets so they cannot pierce the carton; bag loose anchors, sensors, and manuals in a sealed pouch.
  3. Keep cartons upright and clearly mark “Mechanical Trailer Restraint—With Signal Lights”; include box count and unit model on the BOL.
  4. For multi-carton orders, strap boxed units to a pallet with edge protectors to reduce shifting while preserving the boxed classification.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 70 removes density calculations, cutting reclass and dispute risk.
  • Predictable rating enables cleaner LTL cost forecasting and carrier rate benchmarking.
  • Non-hazmat status avoids hazmat fees and accelerates carrier acceptance and tendering.
  • Standard boxed packaging streamlines cross-dock handling and reduces damage-related claims.
