Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
119470.00 Dies; Die Molds, see Note, item 119486; or Injection Molds; iron or steel, used, actual value not exceeding 45 cents per pound, see Note, item 119472, on skids:

Notes

Note 119472: NOTE-Shipper must state on bills of lading and shipping orders at time of shipment that the actual value does not exceed 45 cents per pound. If value is not so stated, used dies, die molds or injection molds will be classed under the provisions of item 119480, naming 'Dies; Die Molds; or Injection Molds; iron or steel, NOI.'

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the molds are used and valued under $0.45 per pound; keep invoices or appraisals to prove the value threshold if the carrier requests documentation.
  2. Mount molds on sturdy skids and secure by bolting through base plates or using heavy steel banding; block and brace to control the center of gravity and protect ejector pins and faces with lumber or guards.
  3. Mark total weight, lift points, and center of gravity on the skid; ensure forklift tine clearance and avoid liftgates for heavy units (e.g., a 4,000 lb mold on a 48x48 hardwood skid with lag bolts and edge protection).
  4. List NMFC 119470 on the BOL and reference Note items 119472 and 119486; if value or packaging differs, update the classification and capture photos before pickup for claim support.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Value-based eligibility (≤ $0.45/lb) can yield lower-rated pricing on dense, heavy tooling compared to generic machinery classes.
  • Proper skidding and securement cut damage risk and reclass fees, protecting margins on expensive LTL moves.
  • Clear NMFC citation streamlines carrier acceptance and speeds quoting, reducing rebills and dispute cycles.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving network flexibility.
