How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Drain the boiler and jacket, cap steam ports, and secure hoses to prevent leaks; carriers may refuse units with residual water.
- Remove or protect gauges, sight glasses, and control panels with foam and corner guards; crate fragile faceplates for hospital-grade autoclaves.
- Bolt the disinfector frame to a skid and block casters; mark center of gravity and lift points for safe forklift handling.
- Document dimensions with protruding valves and service arms attached; ship loose accessories in a labeled, banded crate under the same PRO.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting—no density calculation—reducing reclass fees and surprise adjustments.
- Non-hazardous status broadens LTL carrier options and shortens tender times for OEMs and refurbishers.
- Proper crating and skid-bolting cut damage risk to high-value controls and heaters, lowering insurance claims.
- Clear NMFC mapping streamlines returns and swap-outs for labs and hospitals, minimizing downtime and rental costs.
