How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship as SU (set up) in a wood crate on a skid; block and brace internals and band the base to the skid without cinching across nozzles or flanges.
- Mark orientation and center of gravity on the crate; add This Side Up and Machinery Fragile labels, and wrap the steel with VCI or moisture barrier to deter flash rust.
- Confirm forklift tine clearance and 4-way entry on the skid; post lifting points and rigging instructions so terminals avoid lifting from shell or connections.
- Quote and tender at Class 100 under NMFC 119660; request needed accessorials like liftgate or residential pickup to prevent reattempt fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 rating provides predictable LTL quotes and simpler routing versus density-based machinery items.
- Clear SU-in-crate packaging minimizes reclass/inspection risk, reducing surprise fees and claim exposure.
- Crate-and-skid handling lowers damage rates on high-value process equipment, protecting capital budgets.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and streamlines carrier selection across general freight networks.
