How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 119870 and Class 70 on the BOL; specify “compressed air dryer with blower/fan,” and note packaging (carton, crate, or skid) for fast carrier acceptance.
- Cap and label air inlet/outlet ports, drain any condensate, and secure the unit upright on a pallet or skid with 4-way entry. Add tilt and shock indicators for sensitive models.
- Immobilize external fans and guards, and band loose accessories (auto drains, prefilters) inside the same package. Avoid pallet overhang to prevent OS&D claims.
- Provide exact weight and dimensions for quoting even though the class is fixed. Photograph the packaged unit and record the serial number upon pickup and delivery.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs from a fixed Class 70 rating—reduces reclass disputes and surprise invoices.
- Non-hazmat handling streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork.
- Package/skid-friendly classification encourages forklift-safe handling, cutting damage risk and claim frequency.
- Consistent NMFC mapping helps negotiate better LTL contracts for machinery, improving budget forecasting across projects.
