How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the BOL as “Glider kits, boxed/crated, NMFC 12050, Class 175” and ensure pieces are fully enclosed in boxes or crates—banded bundles do not qualify.
- Brace long airframe parts like spars and ribs; add foam, edge guards, and VCI wrap for aluminum. Mark Do Not Stack if the lid isn’t load bearing.
- Share handling needs at tender: number of pieces, longest length, and forklift entry points. Request long forks or liftgate/flatbed when crates exceed dock limits.
- Seal crates, photograph contents before closing, and add shock/tilt indicators to deter rough handling and support any potential claim.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 175 rating removes density disputes, cutting reweigh/reclass fees and speeding up carrier pricing.
- Boxed/crated requirement reduces damage risk for delicate airframe components, improving claim outcomes and delivery reliability.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges, leading to faster tenders and cleaner audits.
- Predictable costs help glider kit makers, resellers, and clubs budget LTL vs. volume quotes, and smart crate consolidation can trim accessorials.
