Notes
Note 120701: NOTE-Articles tendered for shipment on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms must be securely fastened to and must not overhang the edges of the lift truck skid, pallet or platform deck. Exposed surfaces and edges must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials so as to withstand the normal rigors of the less-than-truckload environment.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm you’re shipping complete conveyors, elevator assemblies, or parts as packaged units; this NOI item applies to packaged goods only, not loose or strap-only pieces.
- Palletize or crate long frames and sections; immobilize rollers, belt runs, and pulleys, then band to skids with edge protection to prevent shifting.
- Shield drives, gearboxes, sensors, and control panels with foam, bracing, or caps on open tubing so small hardware stays contained and protected.
- Mark orientation and center of gravity; use “Do Not Stack” for top‑heavy lifts, and list NMFC 120700 on the BOL (reference item 120701 note if carrier requests).
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Packaging to NOI standards reduces reclass risks and surprise fees compared with shipping loose machinery components.
- Better protection for gear motors, belts, rails, and controls cuts damage claims and minimizes costly downtime at installation sites.
- Right-sized crates and consolidated parts kits lower handling time and cubic charges, improving LTL freight rates.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and keeps transit times competitive for project timelines.
