How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose rigid boxing or crating, then block and brace jigs so nothing shifts; cap sharp edges and wrap wood pieces to control moisture.
- Mark lifting points and orientation arrows on the crate; add “precision tooling—do not stack,” and strap the crate to a skid for safe forklift handling.
- Bundle separate forms/layouts by job with a contents map and part numbers; sandwich flat templates between fiberboard sheets to prevent bending.
- Quote at fixed Class 85, not density-based; list material (wood or metal) and packaging (box or crate) on the BOL to avoid reclass delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 simplifies LTL quotes and curbs reclass fees for tooling shipments.
- Lower damage risk: crate-focused prep (blocking, bracing, edge guards) survives cross-dock handling.
- Operational speed: carriers recognize the Machinery Group code, reducing inspections and pickup delays.
- Cleaner compliance: NMFC 121370 on paperwork strengthens claims and vendor audit performance.
