How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print the BOL with “NMFC 121600 – Garbage Disposal Units – Class 85” so carriers rate it correctly without density or size details.
- Keep each disposer upright in its retail/master box; immobilize the grinding chamber and mounting flange with foam or corrugated inserts, and secure the power cord to prevent abrasion.
- Palletize in a tight pattern on 40x48 pallets with no overhang; add corner boards and stretch wrap. Use straps to the pallet deck, not around box panels to avoid crushing housings.
- Load away from liquids and heavy engine blocks; avoid top-stacking with dense parts. Use “This Side Up” and tilt/shock indicators when shipping premium stainless models.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and cuts reclass risk, delivering stable LTL rates for appliance distributors and kitchen contractors.
- Non-hazardous electric units move on standard networks, reducing compliance steps and minimizing accessorial surprises.
- Boxed packaging aligns with dock workflows, lowering claim probability on motor assemblies and seals, which shortens cycle time and replacement costs.
- Predictable classification supports bulk rollouts—multifamily turns, foodservice retrofits, or retail replenishment—enabling accurate budgeting across lanes.
