How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack each leg in a heavy-duty double- or tri-wall box with dense foam or custom blocking, and cap spindle/axle ends to protect machined surfaces.
- Note on the BOL: “NMFC 12170 Landing Gear Legs, tail wheel, NOI, without wheels or tires – Class 85” and include part/serial numbers for traceability.
- Reinforce long boxes with edge protectors and internal bracing; if over 70 lb, place the box on a skid and band it while keeping the commodity classified as boxed.
- Wipe down and wrap with corrosion-inhibitor film; confirm there are no fluids attached and mark “Fragile – Aircraft Part” and “This Side Up” for careful handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable spend: fixed Class 85 (non-density) reduces reclass disputes and surprise charges.
- Faster quoting and tendering for AOG and MRO shipments with a clear, recognized NMFC line.
- Boxed format streamlines cross-dock handling, lowering damage risk and potential claim exposure.
- Accurate NOI description improves carrier acceptance and compliance for aerospace supply chains.
