How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Cap and plug all NPT or flanged ports before boxing or crating; protect the spring case and adjustment screw with foam blocking so straps never bear directly on the housing.
- For heavier cast-body regulators, choose a rigid crate with internal bracing; add flange covers and moisture barrier bagging when shipping to utilities or outdoor job sites.
- Palletize multiple boxed units on a 48x40 skid with edge protectors, two polyester bands, and stretch wrap; keep vents upright and mark “Do Not Pressurize – Regulator.”
- On the BOL, list “NMFC 121920, Class 85, Non-Hazardous”; include model/serials for receiving and avoid generic terms like “valve” to prevent reclassification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 rating eliminates density calculations, yielding faster quotes and fewer audit disputes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving landed costs.
- Proper boxing/crating reduces diaphragm and seat damage, cutting claims and downtime for OEMs and utilities.
- Accurate NMFC usage (“121920”) on paperwork minimizes reclasses and unexpected fees, stabilizing LTL budgets.
