How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use a purpose-built cradle that supports trunnions and torque links, not the wheel axle, and block the unit to prevent roll or sway during LTL handling.
- Drain hydraulic fluid, cap lines and ports, protect axle threads with covers, and wrap exposed chrome to avoid corrosion or scoring.
- Measure the crated footprint and overall height precisely and provide center-of-gravity or lift-point markings so carriers can handle with forklifts or cranes safely.
- Share detailed photos and packing lists with serial numbers, and request accessorials like liftgate, flatbed pickup, or inside delivery when the crate exceeds dock limits.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Damage prevention on high-value aviation parts reduces AOG downtime and costly repair cycles.
- Clear packaging and documentation speed carrier approvals when no published class exists, improving tender acceptance and transit reliability.
- Right-sized crating and bracing lower cubic usage and minimize oversize fees, cutting total landed freight costs.
- Non-hazardous, drained assemblies avoid hazmat surcharges and simplify routing across LTL and air-forwarder networks.
