Note 122001: NOTE-Applies on blades or cutting edges with or without permanently affixed mounting brackets.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item subtype on the BOL (e.g., steel grader blades, scarifier drums without teeth, box blades) and note packaging as boxes or packages to align with NMFC 122000 wording.
- Record actual weight and exterior cube per package to determine pounds per cubic foot; example: 180 lb in a 4.0 cu ft box = 45 pcf for density-based classing.
- Guard sharp edges with blade covers and banding blocks, then brace inside the box/package to prevent shifting that can trigger damage claims or reweighs.
- Bundle small iron/steel parts tightly to improve density and reduce class; list each component type (teeth, shanks, rakes) on the paperwork for clean inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density entries prevent reclass and reweigh fees, protecting margins on heavy steel parts like grader edges and scarifier shanks.
- Edge protection and tight packaging cut damage risk on expensive wear components, reducing claim costs and downtime for road crews.
- Density-optimized packing (fewer air gaps, right-size boxes) often lowers freight class, delivering better LTL rates for machinery group freight.
- Clear NMFC 122000 descriptions speed carrier approvals and quoting cycles, enabling faster dispatch for time-sensitive road projects.
