How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize the unit with the motor housing facing inward, block and brace the intake and discharge ends, and strap handles or tubes to prevent flexing in transit.
- If gasoline-powered, drain fuel and oil completely and label as drained; for electric models, coil and secure the cord, cap any ports, and use foam end caps in a carton.
- Choose sturdy crates or double-wall cartons for single units; for multi-pack shipments, use corner boards and two straps per axis on a 40x48 pallet.
- Mark lift points and center of gravity; example: a 35–60 lb power grain shovel ships best boxed, foam-protected, then stretch-wrapped to a pallet for LTL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass fees and surprises.
- Non-hazardous status (when drained and dry) speeds tendering and lowers compliance risk at terminals.
- Proper palletization minimizes motor and impeller damage, cutting OS&D claims and downtime for co-ops and grain elevators.
- Consistent NMFC mapping streamlines rate negotiations and enables accurate landed-cost planning for seasonal farm shipments.
