How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC item 122650 and Class 60 on the BOL to prevent reclass. This item ships without density or dimensional qualifiers for classing.
- Block and brace each cast-iron guard on a sturdy pallet using hardwood cribbing, edge protectors, and steel or heavy polyester banding. Example: pair two guards and strap across both into the blocking.
- Mark weight and center of gravity on visible sides. Use a forklift with adequate capacity and avoid shock drops—cast iron is strong but brittle.
- Separate from softer parts like seals or electronics. If mixing freight, add a plywood cap or light crate to stop metal-on-metal abrasion and protect nearby cargo.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 60—fast quotes and fewer reclass penalties.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and minimizes compliance costs and surcharges.
- Rough-cast durability supports standard palletization, trimming custom crating spend while maintaining protection.
- Clear, single-item classification simplifies operations for OEMs and rebuilders, reducing claim risk and accelerating dock throughput.
