How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the parts are airplane propeller blades (not helicopter rotor blades). This NMFC entry applies only to fixed‑wing props.
- Choose rigid packing: crated or heavy double‑wall boxed with foam blocking, tip guards, and edge protection. Example: three blades separated by 2 in closed‑cell foam, tips capped, hub immobilized, and banded to a skid.
- Mark the long dimension and center of gravity; palletize long boxes to improve forklift control. Add ShockWatch/TiltWatch indicators for precision aerospace handling.
- Quote and book at Class 85. Density is not required, but provide exterior dimensions and weight, plus part/serial numbers or FAA tags on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with fixed Class 85 reduce reclass disputes and unexpected fees, improving budgeting for maintenance and overhaul schedules.
- Faster booking and rating—no density calculation—keeps AOG and tight maintenance timelines on track.
- Crating or reinforced boxing lowers damage risk for precision blades, reducing claims, downtime, and insurance exposure.
- Ability to consolidate multiple blades in one crate improves cube utilization and can cut handling and accessorial charges.
