How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare NMFC 122800, Class 85 on the BOL regardless of density; list piece count and orientation (This Side Up) to limit shock and vibration damage.
- Purge and cap any fuel, air, or flue-gas lines on valve trains; bag sensors and harnesses; then bolt the assembly to a skid and crate with foam or shock mounts.
- Protect electronics by locking out power, securing PLC cards, removing loose HMIs, and using anti-static wrap; add tilt and impact indicators for visibility.
- Provide exact weight and dimensions for rating and pickup planning; example: 1 crated burner-management panel, 48x42x60 in, 750 lb, NMFC 122800, Class 85.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing via fixed Class 85 eliminates density disputes and cuts reclass fees for complex furnace control assemblies.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options for foundry, forge, and heat-treat operations.
- Faster quoting and tendering—one NMFC item covers panels, valve trains, and control racks whether crated or palletized.
- Lower claims risk when equipment is bolted, braced, and labeled, safeguarding PLCs, actuators, and sensors and protecting project schedules.
