How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm construction and condition: note if brazed plate (stainless), shell-and-tube (steel/copper), or aluminum finned coil, and state if used units are drained, flushed, and capped.
- Measure the entire footprint, including flanges, nozzles, and lifting lugs; list crate/skid height and note center of gravity and fork pocket clearance for safe handling.
- Package for rigidity and protection: bolt the base to a skid, block and brace, cap all ports, shield fins/tubes with foam and corner boards, and wrap sensitive surfaces against moisture.
- Provide quoting details: dimensions, weight, materials, photos, and packaging method; request needed accessorials (liftgate, crane, residential) and note “Non-hazmat, drained and capped.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NOI details reduce reclass exposure and surprise inspection fees.
- Robust crating protects fragile fins and tubes, lowering damage claims and downtime.
- Complete specs speed carrier approvals and unlock sharper LTL or volume rates.
- Drained and cleaned units avoid hazmat-related surcharges and simplify customs clearance.
