How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use heavy-duty boxed packaging: triple-wall corrugated or a wood-reinforced box, with foam blocking to immobilize the tube bundle and caps on all tube ends.
- Add moisture protection for metallic cores (copper, stainless, titanium) using VCI wrap or sealed poly liners, then cushion and fill voids to prevent shifting.
- Mark handling instructions clearly: Center of Gravity, Do Not Tip, and Keep Dry. Ensure the box orientation keeps tube sheets and fins protected from impact.
- Provide accurate specs on the BOL: boxed packaging, exact weight and dimensions, materials, and lift points. For LTL, place the box on a sturdy pallet and band securely.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear NMFC listing for boxed tube bundles reduces reclass disputes and keeps invoices aligned with quoted rates.
- Purpose-built boxed packaging lowers damage risk to delicate fins and tube sheets, cutting claim costs and downtime.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies carrier acceptance and eliminates hazmat fees and paperwork time.
- Consistent documentation (materials, orientation, lift points) speeds dock handling and shortens transit-related delays.
