How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Quote LTL using NMFC 122866 at Class 85 and specify “wall-mount air heaters on pallets” on the BOL. Review Note items 122867 and 122868 to confirm included components and pallet requirement.
  2. Palletize upright: band through the heater frame, add edge protectors, and wrap with a corrugated shroud to shield louvers, fans/blowers, and thermostats. Block and brace to protect thermal storage rod assemblies from shock.
  3. Avoid pallet overhang and keep center of gravity low. For two units, place side-by-side on a 48x40 pallet, add four polyester straps, and 80–120 gauge stretch wrap; mark arrows for upright orientation.
  4. Request needed accessorials upfront (liftgate, residential or jobsite delivery, inside service). Mark “Non-hazardous, NMFC 122866” and include piece count, pallet count, and any do-not-stack cones if required.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 85 simplifies rating and prevents costly reclass fees, improving quote accuracy for HVAC distributors and contractors.
  • Pallet-only handling reduces damage to fans, thermostats, and thermal storage cores, cutting claims and replacement delays on project timelines.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, lowering total landed cost.
  • Clear NMFC mapping speeds tender-to-pickup for seasonal heater deployments in multifamily, education, and facilities maintenance projects.
