How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density before booking: weigh the boxed or crated unit (include accessories) and divide by the external cubic feet of the package to determine the correct class under Item 170.
- Match packaging to the build: double-wall boxes work for small countertop or hand-crank makers; use a blocked and braced wood crate for floor-standing or dispenser-equipped freezers with mechanical cooling.
- Immobilize moving parts: lock lids, remove or secure cranks, cap dispenser nozzles, and strap augers or hoppers. Use edge protectors and foam to prevent panel dents on stainless housings.
- Document specifics on the BOL: reference NMFC 123135, note “boxed” or “crated,” include accurate weight and outer dimensions, and review Note, item 123136 for any features that could impact handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-driven pricing lets you optimize cost: right-size boxes or crates to preserve density and avoid higher classes due to excess void space.
- Standard LTL processes apply—non-hazardous status means no hazmat surcharges and faster tendering for foodservice suppliers and retailers.
- Damage prevention lowers claims: proper crating and part immobilization protect compressor mounts, dispensers, and stainless panels, reducing delays at installation sites.
- Accurate specs prevent reweigh/reclass fees, stabilizing freight rates and improving landed cost forecasts for seasonal product launches.
