How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Purge and drain units before pickup; cap or plug every port and valve. Example: bleed a refrigeration receiver and thread on steel caps to protect fittings.
- Match packaging to the build: crate complex assemblies with gauges or sight glasses, box smaller purifiers with foam, or palletize heavy receivers and band them tight as approved loose freight.
- Stabilize and mark orientation. Use blocking/bridging inside crates, center-of-gravity labels on skids, and “This Side Up” or lift-point tags to prevent tip and crush damage.
- Write the BOL clearly: “Accumulators/Distillers/Purifiers/Receivers/Regenerators, gas or liquid, NMFC 123230, Class 77.5–85,” include piece count and packaging type (loose, boxes, or crates).
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating across multiple devices keeps quotes consistent and reduces reclass disputes for mixed shipments of receivers, distillers, and accumulators.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges, speeding dock throughput and cutting administrative cost.
- Right-sized packaging (boxed or crated when appropriate) can place freight at the lower end of the 77.5–85 range and reduces claim risk from exposed fittings.
- Standard Machinery Group handling means carriers recognize the commodity, improving acceptance and transit reliability for industrial and HVAC projects.
