How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Select packaging to match size and fragility: heavy-duty box with foam, corner posts, and a skid for smaller coolers; fully framed crate with bolted runners for larger institutional units.
  2. Calculate density to set the class within 85-300. Measure the full outside dimensions (including pallet/crate), compute cubic feet (L×W×H ÷ 1728), weigh, then divide. Example: 48×40×36 in at 240 lb = 40 cu ft → 6 pcf.
  3. Protect delicate components: cap copper stub-outs, shield coil fins with spacers, secure fan guards, and brace drain pans. Use Keep Upright and Center of Gravity labels to guide handling.
  4. Strap the unit to the skid in two directions and block under the frame to prevent sway. For walk-in freezer applications, choose crate builds that allow forklift tine clearance and no top stacking.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Lower freight spend by improving density—tightening crate dimensions or using shorter skids can move you to a lower class within the 85-300 range.
  • Fewer damage claims through rigid crating around coils and fan assemblies, saving replacement costs and avoiding service delays at restaurants, campuses, and food facilities.
  • Faster, cleaner quotes: providing NMFC 123650 with verified weight, dimensions, and packaging type reduces reclass fees and carrier inspections.
  • Predictable timelines for project installs—properly packaged non-hazardous unit coolers move smoothly in LTL networks, minimizing reschedules and labor overruns.
