How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density before tendering: cubic feet = L x W x H (in) ÷ 1728; PCF = weight ÷ cubic feet. Example: 540 lb in a 24x32x48 crate ≈ 25.3 PCF.
- Pick the right pack: small parts fit boxed; complete machines perform best in a wood crate or Package 2190 with internal blocking, bolted bases, and shock protection.
- Stabilize moving components: secure swing arms, bead breaker assemblies, and pedals; cap air lines; drain lubricator or oil reservoirs if present to prevent leaks.
- Document clearly: list NMFC 124675 with calculated PCF on the BOL, mark center of gravity and forklift entry points, and note accessorials like liftgate or residential delivery.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower freight spend by increasing density (tighter crating or removing voids) to qualify for a lower class under Item 170.
- Avoid reclass and fees by using compliant boxes, crates, or Package 2190 and declaring accurate PCF on paperwork.
- Cut damage risk and claims with rigid crating, bolted tie-downs, and component immobilization tailored to tire changers.
- Simplify carrier selection and scheduling—equipment is non-hazardous, enabling faster quotes and broader LTL options.
