How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Keep units in sturdy boxes with dense foam blocking that immobilizes the motor and rotating assembly; cap or lock shafts to prevent bearing damage in transit.
- Detach mounting brackets, sign arms, or base plates and bag hardware inside the box to avoid abrasion and point loads on the motor housing.
- Mark cartons with orientation and center-of-gravity labels; use “Do Not Stack” cones for fragile heads or tall rotators prone to bending.
- List NMFC 124685 and Class 77.5 on the BOL; provide exact count, box dimensions, and total weight for accurate LTL rating even though class is fixed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 streamlines quoting and helps prevent costly reclass and rebill disputes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges or paperwork delays.
- Boxed standard packaging reduces damage risk to motors and bearings, lowering claims and downtime for signage deployments.
- Predictable mid-range rating makes budgeting and contract negotiations easier for retail rollouts and service replacements.
