How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mount the mill to a solid skid and block under the motor and hopper; band with steel or heavy poly straps, then shrink-wrap to keep food-contact areas clean.
- Crate high-value or used units with exposed burrs or stones; pad the infeed/outfeed openings and cap sanitary fittings to prevent damage or contamination.
- Lower adjustable legs, lock or remove detachable hoppers/guards, and secure hardware in a labeled bag fixed to the skid to avoid loss in transit.
- Mark center of gravity and lift points; note “NMFC 124980 – Class 85 – Non-Haz” on the BOL for quick rating and to reduce reclass risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable quotes with fixed Class 85—no density calculation, fewer surprises on LTL rates.
- Lower OS&D risk by skidding and crating precision grinding components, reducing downtime and repair costs.
- Cleaner receiving for food plants when ports are capped and wrapped, accelerating commissioning and QA checks.
- Clear NMFC labeling reduces carrier inspection delays and reclass fees, improving on-time performance.
