How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use strong corrugated boxes or wood crates meeting Package 1273. Block and brace bell housings and diaphragms with foam so nothing vibrates in transit.
- For skidded loads, band and shrink-wrap tightly, keep all horns within the pallet footprint, add corner boards and a top cap, and mark Do Not Top-Load if bells are exposed.
- List the exact NMFC on the BOL: “Alarms, Horns or Signals, NOI, other than plastic – NMFC 12530 – Class 85” to prevent reclass or inspection delays.
- Separate heavy brackets, compressors, or mounting hardware inside the crate to stop metal-on-metal abrasion—common for industrial sirens, marine horns, and plant warning units.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable quoting: fixed Class 85 (no density scale) reduces surprise reclass fees and stabilizes LTL budgeting.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges or special paperwork.
- Claims defense improves when using boxes, crates, Package 1273, or skids as specified—less damage to resonators and terminals.
- Operational efficiency for OEMs and integrators: consolidate multi-unit orders on a single skid to cut touches and speed outbound fulfillment.
