NMFC Description Class

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the build and material (AR steel, stainless, or alloy) against the NMFC to choose the correct class—77.5 or 100—and print NMFC 126460 on the BOL.
  2. Pack each plate in a rigid box with edge guards, foam or corrugated pads, and corner blocking so perforations and sharp edges don’t bow or punch through.
  3. Keep plates flat by strapping them to a backer board inside the box; for large quarry panels, palletize the boxed unit to prevent bending during handling.
  4. Label boxes “Do Not Bend – Machinery Parts: Screen Plates,” and list piece count, net weight, and exterior dimensions for accurate LTL rating and stack planning.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Correctly selecting Class 77.5–100 prevents costly reclass charges and keeps time-critical deliveries to quarries, mines, and recycling plants on schedule.
  • Boxed packaging reduces edge and perforation damage, lowering claims and protecting high-value wear parts that keep screening lines productive.
  • Square, stackable boxes optimize trailer cube and can unlock better LTL rates compared with irregular or loose plate shipments.
  • Clear NMFC citation and class on paperwork speeds quotes, tenders, and claims resolution, shortening the order-to-install timeline.
