How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mount each cap on a rigid pallet or steel skid rated for its weight; use 4-way entry and block the cap to prevent rolling or shifting.
- Protect the striking face with a bolted plate or heavy rubber/urethane pad, then band with steel strapping and edge guards; wrap to control rust if storing outdoors.
- Document materials (cast/forged steel or composite), any adapters or pins included, and exact piece count; add weight, dimensions, and center of gravity on the BOL.
- For jobsite deliveries, book appointments and note crane or forklift availability; mark limited access, uneven terrain, and daylight receiving hours to avoid delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Cut damage claims by shielding strike surfaces and immobilizing heavy caps during transit.
- Speed up rating and avoid reclass by providing full specs when class is not assigned (N/A).
- Lower landed cost by nesting multiple caps in racks or on standard 48x40 pallets to improve cube.
- Prevent extra fees with clear site instructions—appointments, equipment needs, and access notes reduce redelivery and detention.
