How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack fusible plugs in sturdy boxes only; use inner poly bags and chip-resistant dividers so small brass/bronze parts with tin cores don’t rub or scratch.
- Select cartons rated for the load (32 ECT or 44 ECT for heavier counts), keep each box manageable for handlers (often under 65 lb), and seal using the H-tape method.
- Mark the BOL: “Fusible plugs, brass or bronze and tin combined – NMFC 126760 – Class 100 – Non-hazardous,” and include piece counts and net weight for clean audits.
- Palletize tightly: fill voids, add corner boards, and wrap to prevent migration of small parts. Example: 1,000 plugs split into four boxed layers on a 40x48 pallet.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies rating—no density formulas—reducing reclass fees and speeding quotes.
- Boxed packing standardizes handling across carriers, lowering damage risks and avoiding special-handling charges.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and keeps compliance simple for domestic LTL lanes.
- Consistent NMFC use streamlines procurement and freight audits for OEMs and MRO suppliers shipping safety plugs.
