How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify your item fits the scope of Note 126802 (e.g., gear reducers, shaft-mounted drives, couplings, chain or belt drive units) and list exact components on the BOL.
- Select packaging by weight: small precision parts in heavy-walled boxes; heavier gearboxes or drives bolted to skids and fully crated. Block shafts, cap openings, and mark center of gravity.
- Rate by weight breaks: heavier handling units trend to lower classes within 65–85. Weigh and declare each piece or skid clearly to avoid reclass.
- Prep for transit: drain free oil, protect machined faces with VCI wrap, lock moving elements, and use lift points. Banding and edge protection reduce crush and tip risks for loose pieces.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Weight-based classing (65–85) rewards consolidation of heavier units, improving LTL rates without density calculations.
- Multiple approved packaging types—boxes, crates, packages, or loose—reduce packing costs and speed dock handling.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and eliminates HazMat surcharges, shortening quote-to-ship timelines.
- Clear NMFC alignment with Note 126802 lowers reclass and inspection fees, stabilizing budgets and protecting margins.
