How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Secure heavy mule pulley stands or tension carriers by bolting them to a hardwood skid; cap exposed shafts and use edge guards on belt clamps to prevent strap abrasion.
- Bundle small parts—clutch sleeves, shifters, guides, and binder frames—into compartmented cartons, add VCI bags or oil wrap against rust, then master-pack and strap to a pallet.
- For clutch-and-pulley or sprocket assemblies, block and brace to stop rotation, fill voids with foam or lumber, and keep the center of gravity low within the pallet footprint.
- Mark the BOL and outer pack as “Mechanical Components — NMFC 126840, Class 85”; density is not required, and note any light preservative oils to avoid hazmat confusion.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single umbrella item reduces reclass risk by covering clamps, clutches, couplings, guides, and pulley stands under one NMFC.
- Fixed Class 85 enables predictable LTL rate shopping and tighter landed cost forecasting for OEM and MRO replenishment.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat surcharges, shortening dock-to-door cycle times.
- Consolidate mixed SKUs on one pallet under the same item to cut handling touches and improve warehouse throughput.
