How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging by length and weight: heavy-duty boxes for short cores; blocked and braced wood crates for longer or multi-piece shipments.
- Protect ends and surfaces with end caps, VCI wrap, and V-blocks or chocks to stop rolling; fill voids so cores cannot shift in transit.
- Mark gross weight and center of gravity on each box or crate for safe forklift handling; keep pallets flush with crate dimensions.
- Book LTL at Class 77.5 with the description 'Printers' roller cores, steel, boxed or crated' on the BOL to prevent reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 rating eliminates density math, accelerating quotes and reducing rating disputes.
- Purposeful boxing/crating cuts damage on heavy cylindrical steel, lowering claims and reship costs.
- Non-hazardous designation increases carrier acceptance and improves lane coverage and transit reliability.
- Consolidating multiple cores in a single crate trims handling, minimizes accessorials, and reduces cost per unit.
