How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the freight is standalone pulleys/sheaves (V-belt, timing, wire rope) and not mounted to gearboxes or hoists to correctly apply the NOI Class 70.
- Package by weight and material: bolt heavy cast-iron/steel sheaves to a skid or crate with blocking; use double-wall cartons, foam, and a pallet for lighter aluminum or polymer pulleys.
- Protect function-critical areas: cap bores and bushings, guard grooves and flanges with edge protectors, wrap bearings in VCI paper, and remove loose keys or set screws before banding.
- Quote confidently with fixed Class 70 (no density rule). Example: bundle five 8-inch aluminum V-belt sheaves in a double-wall master carton, then band to a 48x40 pallet.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70 speeds quoting and reduces the risk of reclass charges across mixed materials.
- Broad NOI coverage for steel, cast iron, aluminum, and polymer parts simplifies routing whether shipping OEM runs or aftermarket replacements.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines documentation and lowers compliance overhead for LTL and parcel consolidations.
- Damage prevention through proper blocking and groove protection cuts claims, keeps tolerances intact, and protects belt life—lowering total landed cost.
