How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose the right pack: use NMFC Package 1241 or 1273 for boxed pumps with internal blocking, or fasten to lift-truck skids/pallets with banding and stretch wrap; keep everything within the pallet footprint.
- Prep the pump: drain test oil/coolant, cap inlets/outlets, add edge protectors around cast housings, and use a VCI bag or foam to prevent corrosion and movement.
- Bill of Lading tips: write “Pumps, circulating, oil or water, internal combustion engine, NMFC 127600, Class 85, boxed/palletized,” include piece and pallet counts, and avoid mixing other commodities on the same skid.
- Practical example: 8 rebuilt water pumps in double-wall cartons, banded and shrink-wrapped on a 48×40 pallet, rate at Class 85 with no density required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 (no density factor) streamlines quotes, reduces reclass exposure, and keeps audit adjustments to a minimum.
- Damage control: compliant boxes or secured pallets protect shafts and seals, lowering claim risk for engine remanufacturers, auto suppliers, and fleet maintenance teams.
- Faster tendering: non-hazardous status broadens carrier choices and avoids hazmat surcharges, cutting cycle time for routine LTL moves.
- Better consolidation: multiple small pumps under one NMFC on a single skid reduce per-unit cost and dock handling, improving throughput.
