How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 127920 and Class 200 on the BOL, and note packaging as boxes, crates, or drums with the exact piece count and whether loads are palletized.
- Pack blocks tightly to stop shifting; line wooden crates to prevent surface marking on soft tin. Example: 50–100 lb blocks layered with cardboard and steel banded to a pallet.
- Build forklift-friendly unit loads. Center the mass, block and brace inside crates, and apply heavy labels with precise gross weight to avoid handling issues.
- Provide dimensions and weight per handling unit even though class is fixed; this speeds quotes and helps carriers plan cube and loading patterns.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 200 delivers predictable rating, simplifying cost modeling and accelerating LTL quote turnaround.
- Non-hazardous material minimizes paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving total landed cost.
- Sturdy boxed or crated packing reduces OS&D risk for dense metal cargo, cutting claim exposure and reship costs.
- Clear labeling and palletized units reduce reclass inspections and detention, improving dock efficiency and transit reliability.
