How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify materials and hose length: items may be iron plus aluminum or plastic, with no hose or up to 10 ft total. Exceeding 10 ft likely requires a different NMFC.
- Use sturdy corrugated boxes (ECT 44 or better), block and brace parts, and bag any hose to prevent scuffs. Add rust inhibitors for iron components to avoid corrosion.
- Capture exact exterior dimensions for each box. Class is fixed at 85, but carriers price by space, so LxWxH affects cube, stacking, and linehaul planning.
- Palletize without overhang, strap and wrap tightly, and print NMFC 127935 and Class 85 on the BOL. Example: coil an 8 ft hose inside the box and pad fittings.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 eliminates density math and reduces reclass disputes.
- Lower claim risk: the boxed requirement encourages protective packaging for mixed-material components.
- Compliance savings: keeping hose length at or below 10 ft avoids reclass fees and delays.
- Simplified cataloging: one code covers iron/aluminum or plastic combinations, streamlining quotes for auto and machinery parts suppliers.
