How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the pump is a measuring, power-driven unit and not a fuel dispensing pump; note “non-fuel dispensing” on the BOL and reference NMFC note to item 128021 if needed.
- Drain and purge all liquids, cap inlet/outlet ports, lock out or brace moving components, and bolt the base to a skid or crate to fix the center of gravity.
- Shield display compartments with polycarbonate guards or foam-in-place, add corner protection, and use tip-and-tell indicators to deter rough handling.
- List make/model, construction (cast iron, stainless, or alloy), packed form (boxed, crated, or palletized), and overall dimensions for accurate rating and quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear non-fuel designation and accurate descriptions prevent reclassification fees and keeps freight out of the fuel dispenser code path.
- Proper protection for meter heads and displays reduces damage claims and avoids costly downtime for industrial, water treatment, and utility operators.
- Compact, bolted packaging increases density and can unlock better LTL rates while minimizing cubic capacity charges.
- Drained, clean equipment avoids hazmat cleanup surcharges and speeds carrier acceptance and dock turnaround.
