How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the specific regulator type against NMFC 128330 and select the correct class within the 85–100 range; construction and configuration can affect the subclass.
- Protect sensitive features: cap or plug ports, bag the unit to keep debris out, and immobilize adjustment knobs. Use anti-static bags for electronic/voltage regulators.
- Use sturdy boxes or packages with dense foam or molded inserts around diaphragms and gauges; fill voids and mark This Side Up and Calibrated Component on the label.
- Shipping multiples? Place individually boxed regulators in a master package with dividers. Example: five fuel-pressure regulators in foam trays within a double-wall carton.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate class selection (85–100) avoids reclass fees and produces tighter rate quotes for auto and machinery service parts.
- Standard boxed/packaged prep reduces damage to threaded ports and diaphragms, lowering claim rates and returns.
- Non-hazardous commodity status cuts paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges, accelerating pickup-to-tender cycles.
- Compact, stackable cartons use trailer cube efficiently, improving LTL cost per unit on dealer and maintenance distribution.
