How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 128370 and Class 100 on the BOL when tendering boxed automatic hot water tanks; specify packaging as “boxes” for a clean tariff match.
- Palletize upright with corner posts, a top cap, and dual straps; add tilt and shock indicators to protect the glass-lined tank and control components.
- Block fittings and thermostats inside the carton using foam or honeycomb pads; avoid overhanging cartons by using a 4-way pallet sized to the base.
- Limit stack height and use “Do Not Stack” cones for domed tops; keep overall height under 72 inches to reduce tip‑over risk during LTL handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Stable Class 100 eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass disputes and unexpected back charges.
- Boxed packaging improves carrier acceptance and lowers damage claims, cutting total landed cost and cycle time.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and enables economy LTL services without special handling fees.
- Clear placement in the Machinery Group accelerates quoting and streamlines NMFC compliance for audits.
