Notes

Note 128967: NOTE-Also applies on shipments of used cores or shafts, including metal fittings, being returned for replacement of wood parts.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the freight fits “wooden, NOI” per Note item 128546 and cite NMFC 128965 on the BOL; exclude specialty items that have their own NMFC.
  2. Select packaging per weight and fragility: heavy corrugated with foam-in-place for small wooden machine guards; cleated plywood crate with internal blocking for larger fixtures.
  3. Moisture-manage wood surfaces—poly bag or VCI wrap plus desiccant—especially for long lanes or humid routes; close all seams to prevent swell and rub damage.
  4. Design skids for forklifts (4-way entry, no overhang), add tip-n-tells and “This Side Up” arrows, then photograph the packed unit to defend class 60–85 decisions.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Boxes or crates meeting the note can support the lower end of the 60–85 band, cutting LTL spend on wooden machine parts and fixtures.
  • Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and avoids hazmat accessorials, simplifying routing and procurement.
  • Rigid crating and internal blocking reduce claim risk on delicate wooden bucks, guards, and jigs, preserving delivery timelines.
  • Clear NMFC citation and packaging proof minimize reclass disputes and administrative time, improving quote-to-cash speed.
