How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify which of the two NMFC subclasses applies (Classes 77.5–150) by reviewing packaging and finish details in the tariff, then list “NMFC 129620, perforated steel screen cylinders, packaged” on the BOL.
- Package cylinders in rigid crates or well-strapped bundles with chocks to stop rolling; cap both ends and wrap perforations to prevent snagging or surface denting during LTL handling.
- For multi-piece shipments, use spacers or corrugated interleave between cylinders; nest only if your spec allows contact, otherwise separate to avoid abrasion and out-of-round damage.
- Mark center of gravity and handling cues like “Do Not Roll”; request liftgate or inside delivery when no dock is available to avoid delays and accessorial surprises.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize freight spend by meeting the packaging standard that qualifies for the lower end of the 77.5–150 class band.
- Reduce OS&D claims on delicate perforated surfaces with tailored protection, cutting replacements and downtime for mills, recyclers, and screening operations.
- Simplify quoting and carrier acceptance: non-hazardous machinery items move readily across LTL networks with predictable transit and fewer exceptions.
- Improve load planning by using consistent, crate-ready dimensions, enabling consolidation with other machinery parts for better cube utilization.
