How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Drain and purge the unit, then cap and plug every port. Add a note on the BOL stating “separator drained, cleaned, and ports capped” to speed carrier acceptance.
- Secure to a skid or crate with blocking at the base and bracing at the shell. Example: a 450 lb vertical steam separator bolts through base pads to a 48x48 skid with 3/8 in. hardware and steel bands.
- Protect protrusions and instruments: remove gauges and sight glasses for separate boxing, cap flanges, add plywood guards over nozzles, and wrap insulation or paint surfaces.
- Mark lift points and the center of gravity, and label ‘Do Not Fork Under Shell.’ Provide final dimensions including nozzles and legs to ensure accurate LTL quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Using the correct NOI entry for separators improves quote accuracy and lowers the risk of costly reclasses and rebills.
- Non-hazardous status (once drained and capped) avoids hazmat fees and widens carrier options for faster tendering.
- Skidded or crated packaging creates stable, stack-friendly freight, which can unlock better LTL rates and reduce handling surcharges.
- Damage prevention measures—capped ports, bracing, and protected instruments—cut claim exposure and keep maintenance and project timelines on track.
