How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use reels for long or continuous flexible shafting; choose a core and flange size that preserves the minimum bend radius, then strap the reel securely to a pallet.
- When boxing, cap both ends, pad couplings/fittings, and add internal dividers or blocking to prevent kinks and side crush during LTL handling.
- State NMFC 129920, Class 85 on the BOL and note “with or without housings/couplings/fittings.” Density is not required for this simple classification.
- Avoid overhang on pallets. For extra-long boxed shafts, bundle and edge-guard, and pre-clear any carrier long-freight surcharges if exceeding common length limits.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating at Class 85 stabilizes quotes and reduces costly reclass/rebill risk for flexible shafting shipments.
- Reel or well-braced boxing significantly reduces damage to splines, housings, and coupling faces, lowering claim frequency and downtime.
- NOI coverage allows mixed configurations (bare shafts or with housings/couplings) under one NMFC, simplifying procurement and load planning.
- Non-hazmat status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, often improving transit reliability and total landed cost.
