How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 130205 and Class 100 on the BOL with the commodity description “Walk-behind snow blowers, boxed/crated” to prevent reclass or billing disputes.
- Prep each unit dry: drain fuel and oils, cap lines, and label “No Fuel/No Oil.” New OEM units typically ship dry; used units must be purged before pickup.
- Stabilize the auger and chute inside the box or crate using blocks, foam, or straps. Guard control cables, handlebars, and chute rotation gear with corner boards.
- Secure the carton or crate to a pallet to prevent tip-over. Keep the footprint near 48x40 when possible, mark up arrows, and select liftgate or non-stack as needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 rating removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass fees across carriers.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and minimizes carrier refusals for small engine equipment.
- Boxed or crated requirement lowers damage risk to augers, chutes, and controls, cutting OS&D claims and returns.
- Clear NMFC mapping streamlines seasonal rollouts to dealers and DCs, improving cost predictability during peak demand.
