How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 130320 and Class 85 on the BOL to avoid reclassification; describe contents (castings, wear liners, subassemblies) clearly.
- Palletize heavy cast steel sections with steel banding and edge guards; box ceramic or polyurethane liners individually with cushioning to prevent chipping.
- For long spiral troughs or launders, use custom skids with nose/end caps, center-of-gravity labels, and overlength notations if exceeding 96 inches.
- Apply corrosion control for steel parts using VCI wrap and moisture barrier film; bag small hardware and fasteners, and keep distributors/uprights oriented as marked.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing rating disputes.
- Properly packaging mixed materials (steel, ceramic, poly) under one item cuts paperwork and minimizes damage claims.
- Accurate NMFC 130320 use lowers reclass fees and improves carrier acceptance for mining maintenance shipments.
- Predictable handling for overlength troughs helps budget accessorials and prevents surprise charges at pickup.
