How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the freight as “Sprayers, self-propelled, in packages — NMFC 130350, Class 150” on the BOL to prevent reclass and inspection delays.
- Prepare the unit: drain and purge tanks and lines, fold/lock booms, secure steering, chock wheels, and band to a heavy-duty skid or crate with four or more tie-down points.
- Remove or immobilize fragile components (wands, nozzles, hose reels, displays). Pad controls, cap fluid ports, and wrap the poly tank to avoid abrasion during LTL handling.
- Declare accurate dimensions after packaging and note liftgate or forklift needs. Add photos of the packaged sprayer to the shipment file to support carrier handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 simplifies quoting across carriers and leads to more predictable LTL rates for ag and turf equipment movers.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat fees when units are shipped clean and empty.
- Packaging requirement (crated/skidded) cuts damage risk to booms and tanks, reducing claims and downtime in-season.
- Correct NMFC item on the BOL minimizes reclass penalties and shortens transit exceptions, improving on-time delivery.
