How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 130390 and “Class 85 – boxed” on the BOL to prevent reclass, and include the exact part description: spring‑wound internal combustion engine starter.
- Pack each unit in a rigid, double‑wall box with dense foam blocking around the spring housing and drive pinion; cap protruding shafts and protect mounting ears.
- Palletize multiple boxes with no overhang; use corner boards and two straps plus stretch wrap. Mark orientation and “Do Not Drop” to protect the wound spring.
- Ship units dry and without accessories (levers, linkages) loose in the box. Photograph internal blocking before sealing to support any damage claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 (non‑density) delivers predictable LTL quotes across varied models and sizes of spring starters.
- Boxed requirement reduces handling risk and strengthens claims defensibility, lowering replacement and downtime costs for rebuilders and distributors.
- Non‑hazmat status streamlines documentation and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving door‑to‑door transit economics.
- Consistent NMFC coding accelerates rating and routing in TMS/ERP, helping parts departments batch shipments and negotiate better freight rates.
