Notes
Note 130402: NOTE-Applies on hydraulically operated cranking systems and will include necessary pumps, reservoir tanks, accumulators, valves and motors to make a complete system.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack each hydraulic starter or cranking assembly in a rigid, double-wall box with internal blocking or foam-in-place, and cap all hydraulic ports to prevent seepage.
- Drain residual hydraulic fluid where possible, add absorbent pads inside the box, and mark orientation arrows for units with reservoirs or delicate drive ends.
- Palletize boxed units with no overhang, use corner boards and stretch wrap or banding, and note “Do Not Stack” for tall or slender boxed assemblies.
- Cite NMFC 130400 and Class 85 on paperwork; check Note, item 130402 if shipping mixed kits or atypical configurations that might change applicability.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 rating simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing the risk of costly reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier access and keeps hazmat surcharges off your bill.
- Proper boxing dramatically cuts damage risk to precision pumps and valves, lowering claims and replacement delays for OEM and MRO teams.
- Clear, consistent labeling with NMFC 130400 speeds tendering and pickup, shortening lead times for critical engines and standby power installations.
