Notes
Note 130502: NOTE-Provisions include one extra brush with each sweeper.
Note 130504: NOTE-Also applies on sweeping machines used for sweeping driveways, parking lots, airport runways, or other paved surfaces.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Secure the sweeper on a skid or heavy-duty pallet, lock hoppers, pin booms, and strap broom assemblies to prevent rotation; shrink-wrap bristles to contain debris.
- Drain fuel and isolate batteries on self-propelled units to avoid hazmat flags, then protect hydraulic lines and control panels with corner boards and foam.
- Measure the footprint with attachments installed; oversized ride-on or tow-behind sweepers may require partial-load LTL or flatbed—note lift points for safe handling.
- Declare as non-magnetic per NMFC 130500 and reference the note excluding magnetic sweepers (see item 130504) to prevent misclassification and re-bills.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC use reduces reclass fees and avoids being rated as generic construction equipment with higher charges.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and shortens quote-to-pickup timelines for municipalities and plant maintenance teams.
- Proper skidding and immobilization improve stackability and handling, lowering damage risk and potential accessorials.
- Clear differentiation from magnetic sweepers prevents disputes, stabilizes freight rates, and supports predictable budgeting.
